Having a Last Fling at Cancun

Letter to the Editor

1st December 2010

The Last Fling of the Thermophobics?

For 20 years now the thermophobics of the IPCC have been trying to shock us with dire threats of global warming.

But if they are so scared of warmth why do they go to places like Cancun for their annual office party?

Cancun is a lovely tropical beach resort – warm weather, azure seas, white sugary beaches, great reefs and fish, amazing lagoons, a whole strip of massive resorts and cocktails by the pool. Definitely not a hardship location - perhaps they realize their party is coming to an end and want to have some fun before they are pushed off the gravy train?

If they really want to cure their thermophobia they should have their next conclave in Archangel or Murmansk. And it should be supplied only with wind and solar power. Let them see and feel the deathly grip of darkness and ice.

Maybe they would learn that life has nothing to fear from warmth or moist air richly laden with the gas of life, carbon dioxide.

What we all need to fear is a frigid, dry and carbon deficient atmosphere and the remorseless advance of silent, sterile, life-extinguishing ice.

Boycott the Cancun Climate Circus

For Immediate Release

30th November 2010

Boycott the Cancun Climate Circus

Statement by Viv Forbes, Chairman, the Carbon Sense Coalition

The Carbon Sense Coalition today called on all Australian governments to boycott the Cancun Climate Change Circus.

The Chairman of “Carbon Sense”, Mr Viv Forbes, said “we do not want a repeat of the Copenhagen obscenity when 45,000 people gathered to discuss how to reduce things like air travel and conspicuous consumption”.

Forbes said there is no reason for Australia to attend.

“This conference is no longer about climate – it is about international redistribution of wealth and industry from the west to the rest of the world. Australia is part of the spoils they hope to redistribute."

“There is zero chance of global agreement on emissions trading schemes or more carbon taxes. The political landscape and public opinion in the USA has turned dramatically sceptical of the increasingly shrill predictions from the desperate alarmists. Moreover, trading in carbon credits in Chicago has collapsed and even Al Gore is recanting on ethanol. Without US participation, nothing will be agreed globally."

“In addition, for over a decade, the whimsical world climate has mocked the feverish forecasts of the IPCC. Global Warming looks like becoming Global Cooling (still caused by burning coal of course). Prudently they chose tropical Mexico for this conference or the world media would be treated again to the amusing spectacle of warmists shivering in another bitter northern winter of “unseasonal” snow and blizzards."
“So they are plotting a new scheme – enforced global rationing of carbon emissions on a per capita basis. This means transfer of Australian wealth, industry and jobs to India, China and Africa for decades to come. And to bypass parliaments and the suspicious electorate, this will be attempted via “International Agreements”.

“Australia should send no more than one observer to Cancun, and that person should have no power to agree to anything. In particular there should be no promises to extend the failed but costly Kyoto Accord, and no transfer of authority to any new international body.

“A boycott makes more sense than sending jumbo jets of people to beach resorts in Mexico to talk about reducing that sort of activity.”

Free corn anyone?

As our government considers S510: FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, understand how this will eventually deprive us of our ability to grow our own food for our own consumption or sale, and leave us completely dependent on the federal government for our very sustenance - the story below describes very graphically how the government could enslave us by their complete and total control of our food supply -

How to Catch a Wild Hog (or The End of Freedom)

By Lowell E. Hedges

Several years ago I was supervising a beginning teacher in a city school system. One day during our end-of-the-day feedback conference, the young man gave a facial grimace and began to rub his back. I asked him if he had strained his back in the school lab.

After a long period of silence, he sat down at his desk and explained that he had immigrated to the United States because of political problems in his native country. The discomfort in his back was caused by a bullet wound he had received while fighting the Communists who were trying to take over his country's government. He was then a member of the underground nationalist force.

Then he asked me a surprising question: "Dr. Hedges, do you know how to catch a wild hog?"

The question was completely out of context regarding the day's classroom and lab teaching. I replied, "I'm not sure what you are talking about. Tell me."

"First," he said, "you find out where the wild hogs are roaming and feeding and then you put some corn out in the field. Soon they will come to eat the corn. You keep putting out the free corn. More wild hogs keep coming to eat the corn."

"So what?" I said. "That's normal for any animal."

"Be patient. I will tell you what comes next," he said. "After the hogs get used to your free corn, you put up a length of fence along one side of the feeding area. The hogs get used to it. You keep giving them the corn. Then you put up another section of fence at right angles to the first. You keep givin g them the corn. The hogs get used to the second fence. Then you put up another length of fence at right angles to the second section."

"You now have a U-shaped fenced area. The hogs get used to that section of the fence. You keep giving them free corn. Then you put another section of fence with a gate in it, making a closed area except for the gate. You keep giving them corn. Now, the hogs no longer are out in the fields, working to find their own food. They keep coming into the area to eat the free corn. They get used to the fenced area with the open gate. Then, one day you slam shut the gate when the hogs are inside the fenced area. The wild hogs are caught - they are your prisoners."

I understood then that the wild hogs were really the people of his native country and that the free corn was the enticements that the Communists were giving to the people.

"That's correct," the young man said. "Now, the hogs will not get anything to eat unless you give them food. You are in control. They depend on you to feed them, or they will starve. They can't get out into the fields and forests anymore to find their own food. They have probably forgotten how, as it is. They are your servants, your prisoners. They must obey you. Or else they starve."

"The hogs," he said, "were so accustomed to having the free corn, that they ignored the building of the fences that would eventually trap them. When the gate slammed shut, it was too late for them to realize what they had been blind to. The free corn was enticing, so effortless to obtain, but eventually the cause of their loss of freedom. The fence had been built; the gate had been shut."

At this point in our conversation, the young teacher , in a voice shaking with emotion and with fists hitting the desktop, loudly exclaimed, "This is what I see happening in America today! People are being offered free corn by the government. People are blind to the fences being built around them by the liberals - the socialists - and that is what frightens me! Just like it was happening in my homeland. The American people do not learn from history. And history shows that socialism/communism does not work."

"Take note of Russia. Has socialism been the best thing that ever happened to that country? Absolutely not! But socialism is what the American people are being fed, and they don't realize it. All they can focus on is the 'free corn.' They want more and more of the free corn. And this free corn is being fed to us little by little, and soon the gate will slam shut. I am very frightened, and also amazed, that the American people don't see what is being fed us, and for what purpose." With that said, the young man sat down at his desk and continued to rub his painful back.

And I was silent in my chair. And afraid. For I could visualize the supposedly "free corn" being fed to our nation's people and our growing addiction to the "free corn". And I could see the gate being slammed shut. We, the people of the United States of America, because of our ignorance of history, because of our addiction to the supposedly "free corn," could soon be prisoners of liberal socialism.

Along with this fighter for freedom from socialism/communism, I too, wanted to slam my fists on the desktop and cry out in a loud voice for all to hear, "Wake up, America! The fences are being built! Don't you see what is happening to us?" In the agenda of the new Congress governed by liberal socialists, there is much "free corn" being promised to the American people. In our greed for this "free corn," will we ignore the incremental building of the fences and the inevitable shutting of the gate? As I ponder the building of the fences now underway by the new Congress, I remember the old adage, "there is always free cheese in a mousetrap."

It seems the only thing we learn from history is that we do not learn from history.

An article this week in GulagBound covers in more detail the implications of S.510 and why we must call our Congressmen and Senators to vote NO on this bill. Our liberties are being stripped away methodically by this administration.

TSA Screenings

The unannounced implementation of increasingly invasive airport screening procedures have been covered for days on news programs, radio talk shows and by the cable TV pundits. Every day another citizen is reporting their experience with the TSA – many being recorded and posted on the internet for the whole world to see. It started with John Tyner in San Diego, who said “Don’t touch my junk or I will have you arrested!” We saw a young boy having his shirt taken off and being patted down while his father just stood there watching. We heard from a flight attendant who was told she had to remove a prosthetic breast implant for them to inspect. Another man who had survived bladder cancer was forced to show his urostomy bag, leaving him covered in urine and causing him incredible embarrassment. A three year old girl screaming and climbing on her mother as a security agent pats her down. The alternative, like an Orwellian awful option, is that you can consent to submitting to an X-ray scanner that reveals your naked body to an unseen, unknown person “behind the curtain” delivering an untold amount of radiation to every square inch of your body. Even pilots and flight attendants are being subjected to these new screening procedures. Is this the best our government can come up with to assure safe air travel? A report from ABC News stated that there has been an increasing amount of intelligence indicating imminent terrorist attacks originating out of Germany. They may be trying to get explosives on planes by hiding them in prosthetic devises or in body cavities. It appears from reports, though, that such methods of smuggling explosives would not be detected using these devices. What are we doing? We are allowing our government to deprive us of our 4th amendment right against illegal search and seizure without probable cause and the right to be secure in our persons. Parents watch numbly as their children are being traumatized by the TSA. Is it disbelief? Amerika is becoming a police state as we dutifully submit to the ever increasing affronts to our personal dignity.

The federal government continues to be reactive to the terrorists' modus operandi, this latest due to the infamous failed "underwear bomber" of  Christmas 2009. They must be proactive in utilizing intelligence gathering and profiling methodology in identifying people who could potentially be a security threat. Israel has been doing this successfully for many years.

I fear that all of this enhanced screening has someone laughing in a cave somewhere at the lunacy of our government's attempts to thwart another attack in the air while they are planning on blowing up a bridge or train or other largely populated area.

Perhaps it is time to consider that no matter what new technology we can invent, whatever new infringement of our rights or to our sense of modesty and decency can be imagined, it might be better to go back to a time when there was no technology on which to rely. How would we screen people if there were no x-ray machines or metal scanners or full body scanners? The fact of the matter is, when TSA agents are given training and instructions on how to pat down a child, or ask a woman to remove a prosthetic breast, or look at the scanned image of a virtually naked body, they cease to think beyond this type of training to actually notice the profiled behavior patterns that could indicate someone who might truly be a threat to security.

The president should be asked how he would feel if his daughters and wife were required to submit to these enhanced screening procedures while he stood by unable to do anything about it.

Cars, cattle and ethanol

Letter to the Editor from my new friend Viv Forbes at carbon-sense.com

23rd November 2010

Why are emissions from cattle eating grain classed as bad whereas emissions from cars burning grain ethanol are good?

Consider a paddock of corn. Most of the carbon in the growing plant comes from carbon dioxide in the air and is converted to plant material using solar energy via the magic of photosynthesis. Some comes from the atmosphere via microbes in the soil.

This plant material, either biomass or grain, can be fed to cattle or made into ethanol for motor fuel.

Both cattle and cars then use an internal digestion/combustion process to extract the energy stored in the plant material.

Both processes produce gaseous emissions. In cars, virtually every atom of ethanol carbon burnt produces one molecule of carbon dioxide. In cattle, some of the plant’s carbon is stored for a while in flesh and bones, and the rest is emitted as the natural gases carbon dioxide and methane. This methane is soon oxidised in the atmosphere to produce carbon dioxide.

Over the life of a car or a cow, they both produce the same carbon emissions. Every atom of carbon extracted from the air by the green plant eventually returns to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, the plant food. This is the cycle of life.

It is therefore scientific incompetence or deliberate fraud by government climate alarmists to claim that consuming ethanol in cars is good and should be subsidised but consuming the same plant material in cows must be rationed and taxed.

An ethanol industry propped up by subsidies and mandates is not sustainable. This industry damages taxpayers and pushes up the cost of grains, beef, pork, eggs, milk and cereals.

Subsidising ethanol brings no environmental benefits and is the enemy of the poor and hungry of the world. Its special privileges should be immediately removed.

Is California dreaming?

One of the more interesting votes in California on November 2, 2010 was the vote AGAINST Proposition 23. The vote was 61% No to 38% Yes. The Suspend Air Pollution Control Law (AB32) – Proposition 23 - proposed to push back the timeline of the implementation of The Global Warming Solutions Act (AB32) until unemployment in the state dropped to a more acceptable level of 5.5% for at least one year. As of September 2010 unemployment in California was at 12.4%.

The Global Warming Solutions Act (AB32) was signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006. It was passed as a result of the now pretty much debunked (or at least highly questioned) theory that fossil‐based energy produces greenhouse gases that are the primary contributors to climate change. AB32 set the 2020 greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal into law. The reduction measures to meet the 2020 target are to be adopted at the start of 2011. The reduction measures address many sources of polluting emissions and the standards they are required to obtain by the year 2020. In reviewing just one of these reduction measures, the California Renewable Energy Standard requires a Renewable Energy Credit of 20% between the years 2012 – 2014, meaning that 20% of the energy supply must be provided through renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. Looking at this single item in the reduction measures, one can see the massive regulatory demands for compliance in tracking emissions, monitoring emissions and procedures for applications for acceptance of renewable electricity credits. It also provides for assessing fines accruing DAILY for non-compliance. This is in addition to the cap and trade provisions that have been established by AB32 wherein California is working with six other western states and four Canadian provinces through the Western Climate Initiative.

Beginning January 1, 2011, energy prices will skyrocket in the state, due to the required use of renewable energy sources as established in AB32. This will add tremendous stress to an already struggling economy. With more money being spent to pay for basic necessities, less money is available to spend on discretionary items. This will hurt small businesses that will also be paying higher energy bills. Prices will have to be increased to cover the higher overhead costs. The loss of money in the economy combined with the rising cost of operating a business will result in many businesses having to close their doors. There is no better prescription for job killing legislation than this.

Alternative sources of energy are dramatically more expensive than conventional coal power. An article in The Morning Bell from The Heritage Foundation on October 21, 2010 reveals the prices of energy that President Barack Obama’s very own Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects for various sources of electricity per megawatt hour in 2016 (based on 2008 dollars) as follows:

• Conventional Coal Power      $  78.10
• Onshore Wind Power            $149.30
• Offshore Wind Power           $191.10
• Thermal Solar Power             $256.60
• Photo-voltaic Solar Power     $396.10

By not passing Proposition 23, California has made the decision to follow their idealistic path to green energy solutions at the expense of skyrocketing energy costs, as any present alternative to conventional fossil-fuel based energy production can be up to five times more expensive.

California is hoping that its future economic growth will be in becoming a leader in the “green jobs” industry. An analysis by Green Jobs Ready of the voting results concludes that Californians remain committed to upholding environmental standards and remain committed to greenhouse gas emission laws.

In researching for this column, I discovered in the Executive Summary of Assembly Bill 32 the 2007 Integrated Energy Policy Report dated December 5, 2007 it states:

“Decisions affecting land use directly affect energy use and the consequent production of greenhouse gases, primarily because of the strong relationship between where we live and work and our transportation needs. Significant efforts are necessary to reduce vehicle miles traveled to meet the state’s emission reduction goals. California must begin reversing the current 2 percent annual growth rate of vehicle miles traveled. Research shows that increasing a community’s density and its accessibility to job centers are the two most significant factors for reducing vehicle miles traveled.”

This statement ties in with what I have been covering in several columns here in Tampa Bay, and the proposed light rail system, one of which was "How Can We Live Without Light Rail?". The referendum on the ballot for a 14% increase in the sales tax from 7% to 8% was voted down by a 58% majority, and was an amazing accomplishment for a small group of women committed to defeating an incredibly well funded big business and government driven advertising campaign. We are talking David vs. Goliath proportions here. This indicates the intent of the government at all levels to "fundamentally transform" how we choose to live our lives. The goal is to move us into more densely populated regions where we will live, work and shop within walking distance or within walking distance of a public transportation system.

On a national note, cap and trade legislation has been stalled in the Senate, and with the public becoming more aware of the disastrous effects it would have on energy prices, during the lame duck session there will possibly be an attempt to pass new Federal government mandates as Renewable Electricity Standards as outined in this article in the New York Times. This is essentially California’s AB 32 at the federal level. The effects would be the same as cap and trade; higher energy prices and millions of jobs lost.

There is so much work being done at the local and state levels, as well as at the federal level, in passing legislation with overreaching regulations having to do with “climate change” and greenhouse gas emissions. “Exchanges”, “carbon credits”, “renewable electric credits”, are all just different names for taxes. This is a gigantic scheme by government and exchange brokers to make money out of nothing at all, and take any honestly earned wealth from individuals and businesses alike.

It is hard to believe that the proposition to legalize marijuana did not pass, because they must all be smoking the stuff!
